What is 8D audio?
So-called 8D audio doesn’t have eight dimensions: it’s a stereo effect where the music slowly moves from one ear to the other, passing in front and behind, so that on headphones it seems to circle around your head. It took off on YouTube with versions of well-known songs, and people use it to relax, focus or simply hear a track in a new way.
To get the effect, the song is folded to mono and panned between the two channels along a smooth curve that sweeps back and forth. As the sound passes through the center, a filter softens it slightly, the way your own head muffles a sound coming from behind. Finally, a touch of reverb is added so it feels like you’re in a room rather than inside your headphones.
You can adjust how long one full rotation takes (2 to 20 seconds; around 8 seconds is most common), how wide the rotation is (at 100% it reaches each ear fully) and how much ambience there is. The effect only works on headphones or two well-separated speakers; on a phone speaker you’ll barely notice it.
