Why remove UTM parameters from a link?

Links you copy from newsletters, ads and social networks often end in a long tail like ?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=spring_sale&fbclid=IwAR… Those parameters tell the site’s analytics where the click came from. They are useful to the marketer who added them, but they make the link long and ugly, and when you share it they pass that attribution on to everyone who clicks it after you.

This tool removes every utm_* parameter: utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_term, utm_content, utm_id, utm_source_platform and any other key that starts with utm_. It also finds them when they have been placed after the # in the fragment (#utm_source=…), which many simple cleaners miss. With the option that is on by default, it also removes ad click IDs and common trackers such as fbclid, gclid, gbraid, wbraid, msclkid, ttclid, twclid, yclid, li_fat_id, Mailchimp’s mc_cid and mc_eid, HubSpot’s _hsenc and _hsmi, igshid, srsltid, _ga and _gl, and Matomo’s pk_* and mtm_* parameters.

The important part is what it does not touch. Every other parameter stays exactly as written, in the same order and with the same encoding, so a product ID, a search query, a page number or a video timestamp keeps working. You get a link that goes to the same page, just without the tracking.

After cleaning, the tool lists which parameters were removed, so you can see exactly what changed. Copy the clean link with one click, or open it directly in URL to QR or the URL parser. It all runs in your browser: the link is not sent to any server. With ToolStudio Pro you can paste a whole list of links, one per line, and clean them all at once.

How to remove UTM parameters from a URL

  1. Paste the link you want to clean into the box.
  2. Leave “Also remove click IDs and trackers” on to strip fbclid, gclid and similar, or turn it off to remove only utm_* parameters.
  3. Run the tool and check the list of removed parameters.
  4. Copy the clean URL with one click, or send it to URL to QR or the URL parser.
  5. With Pro, paste several links (one per line) and clean them all in one go.

When to use it

  • Sharing an article or product from a newsletter without passing on the sender’s campaign tags.
  • Cleaning links copied from Facebook, Instagram, Google Ads or TikTok before posting them elsewhere.
  • Keeping your own analytics clean by not reusing someone else’s utm_source and utm_campaign in your links.
  • Shortening long links before pasting them into a chat, a document or a bug report.
  • Removing old UTM tags from a URL before adding your own with the UTM builder.
  • Tidying a list of links for a spreadsheet, a bookmark collection or a content audit (bulk with Pro).

Parameters this tool removes

  • UTM parameters: utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_term, utm_content, utm_id, utm_source_platform and any other utm_* key, in the query string or in the #fragment.
  • Ad click IDs: fbclid (Facebook/Meta), gclid, gbraid and wbraid (Google Ads), msclkid (Microsoft Ads), ttclid (TikTok), twclid (X/Twitter), yclid (Yandex), li_fat_id (LinkedIn).
  • Email and marketing tools: mc_cid and mc_eid (Mailchimp), _hsenc and _hsmi (HubSpot).
  • Other trackers: igshid (Instagram), srsltid (Google), _ga and _gl (Google Analytics cross-domain), pk_* and mtm_* (Matomo).
  • Click IDs and trackers are removed only while the “Also remove click IDs and trackers” option is on (it is on by default).

Before and after

Before: https://shop.example.com/shoes?id=482&color=red&utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=spring&fbclid=IwAR0abc

After: https://shop.example.com/shoes?id=482&color=red

The id and color parameters stay in their original order and form, so the link still opens the same product.

Does removing UTM parameters break the link?

Normally not. UTM parameters and click IDs are read by analytics and ad platforms, not by the page itself, so the page loads the same without them. What you lose is the attribution: the site will not know the click came from that campaign. If a link ever needs a parameter that looks like a tracker, turn off the click ID option and only utm_* keys will be removed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are UTM parameters?

They are tags added to the end of a URL, such as utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign, so that tools like Google Analytics can tell which campaign, newsletter or ad a visit came from. They do not change the content of the page.

Does the tool remove fbclid and gclid too?

Yes, while the “Also remove click IDs and trackers” option is on, which it is by default. It removes fbclid, gclid, gbraid, wbraid, msclkid, ttclid, twclid, yclid, li_fat_id, Mailchimp and HubSpot parameters, igshid, srsltid, _ga, _gl and Matomo’s pk_* and mtm_* parameters.

Will the clean link still work?

Yes in almost every case. Only tracking parameters are removed; every other parameter is kept exactly as written, in the same order and with the same encoding, so the link points to the same page.

Can I see what was removed?

Yes. After cleaning, the tool lists every parameter it removed, so you can check nothing important was taken out.

What about UTM parameters after the # in the URL?

They are removed as well. Some campaigns put the tags in the fragment (#utm_source=…) and the tool cleans them there too.

Is my link sent to a server?

No. The cleaning happens in your browser. The link is not sent anywhere and the tool does not visit it.

Can I clean several URLs at once?

Yes, with ToolStudio Pro: paste a list of links, one per line, and they are all cleaned in one run. The free try is for one URL, and you can run it again on that URL with different options.

Is it free?

You can try it free with one URL. For unlimited use and bulk cleaning, ToolStudio Pro costs €1.99 a month, includes every tool, has no ads and you can cancel anytime.
