Why remove metadata from a photo?
A photo says more than it seems. Besides the image, the file stores the phone or camera model, its serial number, the exact date and time, the program used to edit it, sometimes the owner’s name and, very often, the GPS coordinates of where it was taken.
If you email the photo, upload it to a website, a marketplace or a forum, or share it as a file, all that data goes with it. Removing it is the simplest way to protect your privacy and avoid revealing where you live or work.
This tool removes every metadata block: EXIF (with GPS and the embedded thumbnail), XMP, IPTC, comments and PNG text chunks, plus the extra images or videos some phones add at the end of the file. The image is not compressed again: the pixels are identical and the file usually ends up slightly smaller.
By default it keeps two things that say nothing about you and prevent problems: the colour profile (so phone photos do not lose their vibrancy) and the orientation (so the photo does not show up rotated). You can turn them off if you want a completely clean file.
How to remove metadata from a photo
- Drag the photo onto the tool or click to choose it.
- Review the data it contains in the panel on the right.
- Decide whether to keep the colour profile and the orientation.
- Click “Remove metadata” and download the clean photo.
When to use it
- Before selling something on a marketplace with photos taken at home.
- Before sending photos as files by email or messaging app.
- To publish images on your website or blog without personal data.
- To deliver photos to a client without your camera’s serial number.
- To trim a little weight off the images on a website.
What gets removed
- EXIF: camera, lens, settings, dates, serial number, owner and GPS.
- XMP: author, keywords, ratings and edit history.
- IPTC: headline, caption, city, credits and copyright.
- JPG comments, PNG text chunks and the embedded thumbnail.
- Extra images or video at the end of the file (motion photos, HDR maps).
Formats
- JPG, PNG and WebP, saved in the same format.
- HEIC photos need to be converted to JPG first.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the photo lose quality?
No. Only the metadata blocks are removed; the image data is copied as is, without recompression.
Is the GPS location removed too?
Yes. GPS is part of EXIF and XMP, and both are removed. If you only want to remove the location and keep everything else, use the Remove GPS Location from Photo tool.
Why keep the colour profile?
Photos from many phones use a wide colour space (Display P3). Without the profile they would look duller. The profile contains no personal data.
How do I know everything has been removed?
After processing the photo, the tool reads the resulting file again and shows you how many fields are left.
Can I clean many photos at once?
Yes, with ToolStudio Pro: add all your photos and download them together in a ZIP. The free try covers one photo.
Are my photos uploaded to a server?
No. The whole process happens in your browser.
Is it free?
You can try it free with one photo. ToolStudio Pro gives you unlimited use and batch processing across every tool.
