What is a UTM builder?
UTM parameters tell Google Analytics and other analytics tools where a visit came from: which source (newsletter, facebook, google), which medium (email, social, cpc) and which campaign. Adding them by hand is slow and error-prone, and one stray capital letter or space is enough to split a campaign into two rows in your reports.
Enter your website URL and fill in utm_source (required), utm_medium and utm_campaign (recommended), and optionally utm_term, utm_content and utm_id. By default the builder lowercases the values and turns spaces into underscores; you can choose hyphens or keep spaces instead. Quick presets fill in common combinations: newsletter/email, facebook/social, google/cpc, instagram/social, linkedin/social and qr/print.
If the URL already has UTM parameters, the builder replaces them with yours and keeps every other parameter. When the link is ready, copy it or open it in URL to QR to make a printable QR code. Everything runs in your browser.
How to build a UTM link
- Paste the page URL you want to promote.
- Pick a preset or type utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign.
- Add utm_term, utm_content or utm_id if you need them.
- Choose how spaces are written and keep lowercase on for consistent reports.
- Copy the tagged URL, or open it in URL to QR.
When to use it
- Tagging links in a newsletter so each email shows up as its own campaign.
- Tracking organic social posts on Facebook, Instagram or LinkedIn.
- Telling apart two buttons or banners in the same email with utm_content.
- Measuring flyers and posters with a QR code tagged utm_medium=print or qr.
- Tagging links in partner sites, podcasts or influencer posts.
UTM naming best practices
- Always use lowercase: Analytics treats Facebook and facebook as different sources.
- Avoid spaces; pick underscores or hyphens and stick to one.
- utm_source is who sends the traffic (newsletter, facebook, google); utm_medium is the channel type (email, social, cpc, print).
- Use the medium names your analytics tool expects for its channel groups, such as email, social, cpc or referral.
- Give campaigns descriptive, dated names, e.g. spring_sale_2026.
- Use utm_content to tell apart links that go to the same page from the same email or post.
- Never add UTM parameters to internal links on your own site: they start a new session and overwrite the original source.
- Keep a shared list of the values your team uses.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which UTM parameters are required?
Only utm_source is strictly required. utm_medium and utm_campaign are strongly recommended, because most reports group traffic by them.
What if my URL already has UTM parameters?
They are replaced by the ones you enter. All other parameters in the URL are kept.
Why lowercase everything?
Analytics tools are case-sensitive, so Email and email would show as two different mediums. Lowercase keeps reports consistent. You can turn the option off if you need to.
Can I make a QR code with the link?
Yes. Open the finished link in URL to QR to download it as PNG or SVG.
Is anything sent to a server?
No. The link is built in your browser.
Is it free?
You can try it free with one URL. ToolStudio Pro gives unlimited use of this and every tool for €1.99 a month, with no ads, cancel anytime.
